Canals Underfoot Photo Zines
Accordion (or concertina) zines with black and white photographs of canals in and about Fort Collins, Colorado. Each zine is 5.5" x 4.25" x 1"+/- when folded closed and has from 45-57 photos and a map detailing where that particular canal crosses paths with roadways. When stretched out, these zines are 22 ft - 28 ft long from end to end. Three canals to choose from (buttons above).
Backstory: Nina fell down a rabbit hole in February, 2024. Canals landed on her radar in a big way and she set out to document them where they intersected with roads and footpaths in and around Fort Collins. At first black and white photography was a medium of necessity but quickly grew on her. As of May 1, 2024, Nina has traveled (driven, rode the Max, but mostly walked and biked) 150+ miles to take photos for this project. And in her free time, she painstakingly assembles these accordion zines by hand.
On her wish list of canals to photograph over the summer: Arthur Ditch, Dixon Lateral, Jackson Ditch, Lake Canal, Larimer County Canal, Larimer and Weld Canal, Little Cache La Poudre Ditch, Mail Creek Ditch, Poudre Valley Canal, and Sherwood Lateral (not in that order).

What on earth is a zine? We are so glad you asked. A zine represents a range of small-batch, DIY,"magazine-like, or in this case, book-like publications. They come in many styles in format, binding and sizes. Apparently there are no rules which sounds good to us. (Pronounced zeen.)
Why zines? Self-publishing via zines has been an interesting and educational way to share a variety of subjects, and a way to get one's feet wet unhindered by the pressures and censorship of mass marketing, or the looming specter an overbearing editor (of my own fabrication or otherwise). How lovely is that!
